Netherbrook Primary School

Key Stage 1

Years 1, 2 and 3 make up Key Stage 1 (Phase 1) at our school.

In Key Stage 1 our children enjoy studying Numeracy; Literacy which includes writing, reading, phonics, grammar, spelling and handwriting. Religious education is taught as a separate subject.

We follow the Letters and Sounds programme for our phonics. This is taught in small groups, within each year group, on a daily basis.

Science, History, Geography, Music, Art and DT are taught through topics enabling children to make links between subjects and teachers always ensure these lessons are creative and hands on. The children are also encouraged to work independently.

The staff are excited about the new opportunities that this will bring to teaching and learning and are currently planning new topics for every year group.

Year 3 go swimming every week during the Autumn term and most reach the expected level of being able to swim 25m unaided by the end of the session.

All children have the opportunity to take part in Forest School lessons, with a designated trained leader.

Our parents and children enjoy 'Inspire' sessions, where they work together in school to plan and make something linked to their current topic.

We have further enrichment activities through themed weeks, visitors to school and year group visits to places of interest. We are able to take advantage of the many historical features within walking distance of our school.
